The Wright State University women's soccer team added a win to their record, taking down the undefeated Green Bay Phoenix at home.
On Thursday, Oct. 1, the Raiders played at Alumni Field in a Horizon League (HL) matchup against the 8-0-2 Green Bay Phoenix (UWGB).
The match began at 7 p.m. with the Phoenix taking control for the first 20 minutes before senior forward, Macey Moore, scored her first goal since returning from an ACL injury, making the score 1-0 before ending the half.
Head Coach for Wright State, Travis Sobers, talked about how this goal helped the Raiders secure the win and the impact it had on Moore.
“First and foremost, to actually get her on the field and score for her confidence and the team. I thought it gave us a good lift,” Sobers said. “I was really happy with her getting the goal and the time we scored was really good.”
Going into the second half, WSU built on their momentum and secured another goal made by sophomore midfielder Taliah Pellizzari, giving them a 2-0 lead against the unbeaten Phoenix.
Aside from the two goals WSU secured, sophomore goalkeeper Leigha Lauer, had a great impact in finalizing the win for the Raiders.
Lauer played all 90 minutes of the game and had two major saves in the half.
However, later in the 68th minute of the match, UWGB senior defender Grace Downey was able to respond and give the Phoenix the final point of the match, making the final score 2-1.
Lauer talked about what was important in securing the match.
“We’ve kind of fallen apart at the end, or when we face diversity, we’ve kind of shut down. So, leading up to this game, all week we were just kind of focusing on staying together and grinding through the whole game and making it count,” Lauer said.
Lauer has now been honored in the HL twice as defensive player of the week.
Sobers talks about the performance Lauer has had and the impact she makes on the team.
“It’s nice to have that calm back there, where we know that if the play breaks down, she's able to make a save. We trust her and the teammates [trust her] when she does make the save,” Sobers said.
The WSU women's soccer team is now 3-2-0 in the HL.
