New eSports Facility

Students and Staff Agree: Sports Games Being Added To eSports Will be Beneficial

Wright State University's eSports has a wide variety of options, but some people may be left wondering why there is no sports gaming team. To gather the answer, people across WSU were interviewed on their thoughts regarding this subject.

How to start a team

Those who wonder about this subject may wish to change it in the future, which would first require communication.

Jacob Litten, the Director of eSports at WSU, discussed how to start a new team.

“I would have them sit down with me, talk about how the competitive scene works and then show me the college league,” Litten said.

Once the competitive aspect is explored and the college league is found, a student interested in starting this team would then have to explain why the club would benefit from having a new sports team added, according to Litten.

Billy Willis is the Associate Director of Campus Recreation and is involved in and knowledgeable about the community of eSports.

“I think it would be fantastic to broaden what we can offer,” Willis said.

Opinions of others

Mou Bak is a marketing major at WSU who shared thoughts regarding eSports games from a student perspective.

“NBA 2K is one of the most popular sports games, and a lot of people here at [WSU] are sports fans. So, I think that’s a game that they would enjoy," Bak said.

With the popularity of these games being high, it would follow that WSU community members would attend and join the teams.

Stephanie Allen is the Managing Attorney at Student Legal Services, and shared her insights into whether eSports should add a sports game.

“I support it. There’s a lot of people who like sports; a lot of folks play Madden and things like that. I think they would enjoy that," Allen said.

The competitiveness of sports games

Sports like NBA 2k have their own eSports league, similar to physical sports. People resonate with playing as Stephen Curry or their favorite player, whether that person is real or fictional. Imagine creating your own player: with your own face in a sports game and playing against the very best in the world.

Overall, it seemed that eSports and others thought that social additions to teams on campus would be good. Additionally, some people on campus might be able to do better with playing online rather than real sports in-person.

The idea of eSports adding a sports-themed game is a very intriguing proposition that people on campus would enjoy. Hopefully, students will see more sports games added to the eSports roster in the future.
