The Student Government Association (SGA) is a group of student leaders who work to improve life for students at Wright State University (WSU). Their new president and vice president were elected last Spring.
Eimaan Virani, a junior who is majoring in Public Health, will be this year’s SGA President. This will be her third year being an active member of SGA. She has been a part of many other campus organizations as well, including Miracle Makers, Muslim Student Association and this year sits on the Honor Student Advisory Board.
In the past, SGA has lacked student outreach which Virani plans to change. She, as well as the rest of SGA, have been working to make visibility and collaboration their top priorities.
“I want to see so much collaboration this year,” Virani said. “I can very happily announce that we’re bringing the House of Representatives back. We plan to meet monthly with all of the student leaders here on campus to make sure that we are serving what they need.”
With the House of Representatives coming back, this will give all organizations on campus the opportunity to work together, collaborate on events and express any of their concerns as individuals, or as groups, to people who can help them get the assistance they are looking for.
In addition to this, there are plans to hold Town Hall meetings with the Residential Community Association and a voter registration night with Black Men on the Move.
The leaders of SGA want students to know they exist to represent them and are available to listen to their problems and do what they can to help.
“Most of you probably don’t even know what [SGA] is, so my main goal is just to make sure that our senators, our directors, our executive board and especially myself are out on campus and in spaces where students know how to access us,” Virani said.
Myah Dražetić, a junior who is majoring in Health Sciences, will be serving alongside Virani as Vice President. This is her first year being in SGA, though she spent last year as President of the Abilities club, and will continue leading this year as well.
Dražetić spoke about how her experience in Abilities, and how continuing to lead them this year, will help her in her new role as Vice President of SGA.
“I think [my experience] will help fit into my new job position within student government by not only helping me be more professional, given my prior role, but also being able to help our students with disabilities more. I feel we are very underrepresented, especially in student organizations,” Dražetić said.
Working with students has always been a passion for Dražetić and she shared how every student is unique and has their own experience on campus, and she wants to do her best to listen to everyone’s stories and help them find their place at WSU.
“The freshmen this year are totally different from the freshmen last year, and it’s really cool to talk to everybody,” Dražetić said. “I just want students to know that I don’t care who you are, but I care about you.”
SGA holds public meetings on Tuesdays at 8 p.m. in the Wright Brothers’ Room in the Student Union, where students are able to ask questions or voice concerns, in addition to their office hours.
Students can expect a much higher presence of SGA on campus, from tabling events to social media posts and collaborations with all student organizations. The student leaders are excited to increase awareness about what SGA is and what they are able to do through it.
