Wright State’s Student Government Association (SGA) voted on the Resolution for Undergraduate Classroom Community and Student Connection on Tuesday, Sept. 29. It was passed unanimously, with 0 votes against it.
The purpose of the resolution is to suggest that professors on campus plan a type of activity planned for their students at the beginning of each semester. This way, students will not feel isolated or alone in their classes.
“Therefore, be it resolved in the [WSU SGA] recommends that [WSU] encourages instructors to facilitate an introductory icebreaker or peer connection activity during the beginning of each academic course, be it resolved that the recommended activity provides each student with a reasonable option to introduce themselves to, communicate with, or otherwise become acquainted with at least one other student in their class,” the resolution states.
The resolution was first proposed at an SGA meeting on Tuesday, Sept. 15. The team then had one week to think it over, ask any questions or make amendments before voting on the resolution.
It was then sent to the faculty senate the following week to allow professors to read it over and give their input before sending it to a vote.
The resolution was written by SGA Director of Academic Affairs, Lauren Johnson, who is a senior at Wright State.
“I’m really excited to be part of SGA this year and passing that resolution was something I’ve been wanting to do for like a year or two now with my Dean of Students Advisory Board,” Johnson said. “We were going to do it in our college, but having the opportunity to do it university wide is really cool.”
Other members of SGA voiced their support for the resolution when it was first proposed, including Emma Evans, the College of Engineering and Computer Science Senator.
“I think this is a great idea, personally,” Evans said. “I don’t know anybody in any of my classes because we didn’t do anything like this.”
The vote was open only to members of the SGA Senate, who voted unanimously in favor of the resolution. It was then passed and will be implemented beginning in Spring 2027.
This was the first resolution to be proposed and voted on by this year’s SGA staff. President Eimaan Virani shared her excitement about the new university change.
“It is an awesome resolution. It is a simple solution to a very big problem. I think it will do well,” Virani said.
By having students get to know each other at the beginning of classes, the hope is they will feel more comfortable asking each other questions, reaching out when they need help and feeling more included at WSU.
