Wright State University (WSU) took on Oakland University (OU) in men’s baseball this weekend in a three-game series at Nischwitz Stadium.
The Raiders won two of three games against the Grizzlies; the last game, on Sunday, came down to a tie with a winning score for OU in the 10th inning.
On Friday, March 27, the first game was held against the Grizzlies at Nischwitz. The Raiders finished the game with an eight-run lead, leaving the score 12-4.
The announcers for the game, which was streamed on ESPN+, talked about the game Braylen Blomquist played and his hit, which secured the win.
“That ball was gone the minute it hit the bat. It’s good to see him put a little power in it,” announcers said.
Brandie McFarland, a WSU fan, watched the game and commented on some of Blomquist’s hits.
“He put the work in from such a young age, and he’s doing great things,” McFarland said.
Freshman Michael Zielinski was one of many stand out players of the game.
“Zielinski was the lone man out of the bullpen on Friday evening, pitching four shutout innings. The freshman pitched the final four innings, allowing just two hits while striking out five Golden Grizzlies en route to his first save of the season," the WSU athletics page reads.
On Saturday, March 28, the second game was held against the Grizzlies. It was another sweep for the Raiders, who won 11-5.
While the Raiders were able to take a big lead in the game, Oakland attempted a comeback by getting 2 runs in the inning, giving the Grizzlies a total of 5 runs. WSU was able to stay secure with the lead.
On Sunday, March 29, the final game for WSU was held against OU. The Grizzlies felt the tough loss in the first two games and were determined to put up a fight for the final game of the weekend against the Raiders. Each team put up a fight as they played 10 innings, as opposed to the normal 9 innings. At the end of the ninth inning, the score was tied 7-7. Going into the 10th inning, both teams showed determination, but the Raiders were not able to pull out the sweep compared to the first two games.
WSU men’s baseball is headed to another three-game series against Youngstown State, starting Friday, April 10, and going until Sunday, April 12. For more information, check their schedule.
