Renovation of 20-Year-Old Gym Complete

The Wright State University (WSU) campus recreation center has re-opened its doors, welcoming students back to campus with updates.

Before winter break, the recreation center announced that the gym would be cleared for updates. The announcement included that new materials would be brought in, as the previous gym equipment was up to 20 years old.

The gym remained closed during the break, offering the new semester as a chance for students to return to the updated gym. Improvements on lighting and floors in the gym were made, along with equipment for workouts focused on strength and cardio.

New equipment pieces include a stair stepper, which has been popular and widely discussed amongst students, as well as a hack squat and glute bridge machine.

Students expressed their excitement for these updates, including those who attended the previous gym and those who feel more encouraged to become regular visitors due to the new improvements.

Acting major and active gym attendant, Johanna James, expressed her preference of the new gym because of increased options.

“I sorely missed out on the stair master. That was the biggest loss for me. They really didn’t have a lot of options for cardio, they had ellipticals which was nice, but I know those aren’t as popular, so now having the option to have a stair master is super nice, and the calibrated machines are definitely way better,” James said.

Drew Corbett, the Director of the Student Union, spoke on the changes.

“Now everything has turned over to functional fitness and free weights and spaces to be able to do floor exercises,” Corbett said.

The updated fitness center is now open and operating, with all the new equipment ready to be used.

“It features state-of-the-art equipment and features enough space to accommodate all kinds of different activities,” the recreation center said.
