Wrestling the Headlines: Meet News Editor Julia Kirk

Julia Kirk recently rejoined The Wright State Guardian’s staff as the News Editor. With a passion for editing and a love of writing, Kirk brings her energy and goals to the position.

Kirk is a junior majoring in communication. She explained that she knew about The Guardian before she came to Wright State University (WSU). She described being drawn to the idea of a collegiate-level newspaper.

“That was one of the first things that I looked into applying for once I got onto campus. And then I just had such a great experience when I was at The Guardian,” Kirk said.

Kirk served as an intern for almost a year before working as the Wright Life Reporter as a sophomore. At the start of this school year, she took a break from the organization.

“I missed it,” Kirk said of her time away.

She described loving the people and community throughout her time at The Guardian.

“It's much more of a learning environment than I think I originally thought it was when I was coming in,” Kirk said. “It's in an environment where the people feel like they have room to grow.”

Kirk recalls looking up to characters like Rory Gilmore, who was an editor for Yale Daily News. Kirk was hoping to be like her one day. Now, she feels that she is.

“I've always had a big passion for editing. I love publishing and creative writing. So [having] the chance to be able to actually get to do real-life editing for a newspaper was just so exciting. And so when I heard the position was open, I was like, I have to take it,” Kirk said.

With her experience in the organization and interest in the work, Kirk brings many ideas and goals to the position.

“When you're reporting on news, even if it's at like a community level, like at the Dayton level, or even at a state level, finding ways to connect that back to [WSU] on a personal level,” Kirk said.

As the leader of the news team, Kirk will have the opportunity to shape stories by guiding writers in the right direction.

“[I’m] excited getting into this leadership position, because I've never really been in a leadership position, so I think that'll help me be more confident,” Kirk said

With opportunities to give feedback, this position will offer a wide range of leadership skills for Kirk to learn and grow in over the semester.

Outside of journalism, Kirk also enjoys Skyrim, skateboarding and has an interest in professional wrestling. She plans to attend wrestling school after college and hopes to have a career in either wrestling or editing.

“If I could be a writer during the week and a wrestler on the weekends, that would be my perfect mix,” Kirk said.
