On July 25, Brad Chandler was named the new athletic director at Wright State. Chandler brings 17 years of experience in athletics administration to WSU’s athletic department.
Chandler first went to Michigan State University and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in finance. He went on to earn his law degree at the University of Toledo College of Law. It was here that Chandler began his career
Chandler began his career in athletics as an intern at the University of Toledo. He then held roles at Arizona State University, Rutgers University and Ohio State University. His most recent position was with Bradley University as their Deputy Athletic Director.
At Bradley University, he held several roles. His background in finance helped him serve as the athletic department’s chief financial officer. He also led the fundraising campaigns for the department.
Chandler took over this role after a year of athletic success for WSU. Both the men’s basketball and the women’s volleyball programs won the Horizon League tournament last season. Those teams also made appearances in the NCAA national tournaments. The men's baseball team won their 11th Horizon League title and beat Vanderbilt in the regional portion of NCAA regional tournament. The women’s bowling team was also nationally recognized, ranking 11th in the national rankings. The men’s basketball team played in a matchup against the University of Virginia, which was nationally televised game.
The success of the men’s basketball team is one reason why WSU has been put onto a national stage. This attention is something that excites Chandler. When asked about his vision for department, he said he wants to capitalize on those moments of national attention.
“When we play against Virginia on national television, that’s a two hour long commercial for Wright State,” Chandler said.
When asked about his plans for this upcoming year, he cited both winning championships and setting up his student-athletes up for future success.
“It’s not just about the 4 years, it is about the next 40 years,” Chandler said.
This saying was adopted from his Athletic Director from his time at Bradley University. He seeks for the department to help develop the student-athletes “academically and socially.”
Chander was asked about his message for WSU students and fans. He encouraged students to attend the games. “They have the greatest impact on the in-game experience,” he said. He emphasized that the student section was more than just "an experience for your 4 years" and that students impact the overall atmosphere at games.
Chandler is ready to lead the way as WSU heads into their next athletic year.
