As the Sports Reporter, Brooklyn Woods brings a passion for sports writing to The Wright State Guardian.
She grew up surrounded by sports, watching as well as participating in them throughout high school. Although she did not want to be a professional athlete, she still wanted to be in the sports industry.
Woods is a media studies major at WSU. Initially, she planned to join the student radio.
“Once I started taking more writing classes at WSU, I heard more about The Guardian, and I realized that’s more what I wanted to get into," Woods said.
When she realized she could do other jobs within the sports field, and be able to combine two things she loves, writing and sports, it was perfect.
Woods got into The Guardian after her first class at WSU with Professor Dave Baxter, who brought in a previous Editor in Chief (EIC). The EIC visited the class, talking about what The Guardian is and that they were hiring.
After this interaction, Woods followed The Guardian’s Instagram. When she saw an opening for a sportswriter, she applied.
In her time as a sportswriter at the student newspaper, she has written many articles, one of her favorites being about mental health within athletes.
“I just think it’s an important topic and not a lot of athletes know about all the resources," Woods said.
Her favorite part of the job has been meeting all the people, both through interviews and those she works alongside. She noted how, through these new connections, she has learned more about WSU and writing as a craft.
"I have become more involved and a lot more passionate about what I want to do here," Woods said.
Woods would like to be a sportswriter after graduating.
Outside of sports writing, Woods also loves breaking, political and celebrity news.
“I just like to be informed on things before everybody starts talking about it," Woods said.
Aside from writing, she also loves playing with her Goldendoodle, Millie, and watching reality shows.
