From Books to Bleachers: Destressing with WSU Sporting Events

Attending sporting events at Wright State University is an easy way for students to relax and take a break from their academics. Stress is common for many students, so getting involved on campus and taking time away from schoolwork can be a great way to recharge. It is important for all students to find ways to destress and experience new environments around campus.

Destressing from school with sporting events

School is stressful for almost all students. Between classes, homework and studying, it can be easy for students to find themselves overwhelmed.

However, for many WSU students, an easy way to destress is by attending events on campus. It is also an easy way for students to get involved on campus. These events can even include sporting events.

WSU offers many sports from Division 1 to club level, so there is an event that will cater to everyone. These sporting events offer entertainment, food, free items and the chance for students to hang out with their friends.

Daelynn Thompson is a junior at WSU, with a major in finance. She talked about what keeps her going back to these games.

“One of my favorite things about attending sporting events is how often they give away fun free stuff, whether it is a t-shirt or koozies for drinks, it is like a little incentive that gets people to come out and cheer on our teams,” Thompson said.

How sporting events help students destress

Most on-campus sporting events are free for WSU students with their Wright1 card.

Sporting events typically do not go past three hours. Sometimes, they can run on longer, but this is in the event of overtime or delays in games. This is the perfect time frame for a study break before getting back to work.

Emma Doci is a senior with a double major in biochemistry and molecular science and international business. Doci talked about the different environments from studying to attending games.

“I think games really strengthen my relationship with [WSU]. I mean just like with all the spirit, so like cheering on the teams, being there with my friends. I feel like that just makes me feel like I’m in something bigger with all the vibes and stuff, I think it makes me feel part of a community," Doci said.

The sense of belonging and feeling welcome is important to all students. Remember that students are surrounded at these games and all are welcome, even if you do not fully understand the sport.

Experiencing stress is never ideal so finding ways to avoid this is key for everybody. Too much stress can affect your mood and your schoolwork.

“[When] studying I need to be focused and concentrated but when I go to a game, I can just cheer with my friends and just have fun and I feel it’s a great way to see a lot of my friends out and about to destress,” Doci said.

Overall, it is important to not let your stress take over. Next time you feel overwhelmed, head over to the field or court and enjoy a game to clear your mind.
