With midterms coming up and the stress of school weighing everyone down, there are always some bright spots around campus to lift your mood, like the Sigma Gamma Rho bake sale on Thursday, Feb. 8.

Prepping for the sale

Sigma Gamma Rho member Crisdana Randall said the idea for a bake sale versus other methods was quite easy to come up with.

“Everyone loves bake sales,” Randall said.

The bake sale was a fun way for the whole sorority to get together and make the treats as a community and was also a good way to draw people in who might not have heard about it ahead of time.

Setting up an event like this is quite easy to do. Randall went on to Engage and was able to book the table outside the Hangar in Allyn Hall—a great place to set up. Students are constantly in and out of Allyn Hall going to class and getting food. The crowds were sure to bring in lots of business.

The event on Engage and the CORQ app had an unusual time slot. Instead of having their sale right on the hour, the sorority’s time slot was from 12:22 to 2:22 p.m. Randall explained this meaningful choice.

“The Sigma Gamma Rho sorority was founded in 1922, so whenever we need to come up with a meeting time, we try to incorporate the number 22 in it,” Randall informed.

Running the bake sale

The bake sale was set up very simply. The group had a table with all their baked goods and had different members of the sorority running the booth throughout their set time. They also had pictures and papers on the table that explained their sorority and the cause for their bake sale.

Students do not always know when there are going to be events on campus due to their own hectic schedules. This is why having a table set up outside the Hangar was so beneficial in bringing in business. Even if people did not know about the sale ahead of time or did not know what the money was going towards, the table of home-baked goods drew in customers.

“It’s easier to find events on campus when they’re set up in the open like this,” one student said.

Although the student did not know what the event was for upon first glance at the Poodle’s booth, the sorority informed customers upon purchase.

Raising money for the sorority

Every fundraiser has a cause, and the bake sale was no different. Sigma Gamma Rho is a large sorority that has many groups across the country. According to the official Sigma Gamma Rho website, their sorority aims to “make society better through sisterhood and empowerment.”

The cause of the Poodle’s bake sale was to raise money for their conference. Every so often, all of the different Sigma Gamma Rho sororities from across the country will all get together in one location. This year, the sorority will be going to Houston, Texas in July.

In addition to the conference, their sorority also needed to raise money for their Charter Week. Charter Week is one week of the year where the sorority puts on different events for the community. Sigma Gamma Rho’s Charter Week was Feb. 11 through Feb. 16, and it included community service, arts and crafts, a rock your body dance, makeup classes and karaoke.

The bake sale was a great way for the members of the sorority to spend quality time together while finding a way to raise the money necessary for their needs as they continue to move through the year. Be sure to look out for any future events the Sigma Gamma Rho Poodles might put on through Engage.
