Wright State University’s event organizing group holds trial Valentines Day event for students in need of last minute gifts for partners, friends, family and professors.

The organization and purpose

Ashonti Nixon, the University Activities Board director of campus events, played a major role in coordinating ‘UABe My Valentine’. Nixon described the purpose and goals of UAB in holding these events.

“We are all about people having fun,” Nixon said.

Nixon also stated that UAB’s purpose with these events is to provide a distraction from school and stressors. In fall 2022, UAB collaborated with Dunbar Library to host de-stress events before final exams.

Crafts and goods

During the event students made gift bags with bear keychains and cards along with ‘things I love about you’ jars.  The jars are repurposed snow globes where an attendee takes a snow globe and construction paper and writes down personal affirmations, attributes students love about a partner or self-love quotes.

This is the first year UAB hosted this event. Nixon explained that UAB originally planned to start this Valentine’s event next year; however, the director decided not to wait.

“I was like, ‘this could be a good event for people who just want a free gift for their significant other, teacher or basically for themselves,’” Nixon said.

UAB already has plans for this to be an annual event. Nixon mentioned that there will likely be a different craft every year, but that the candy will definitely be part of the event because candy as it is a staple of the holiday.

Upcoming UAB events

UAB’s month of events in February 2023 includes a “Blind Date with a Book” on Feb. 22 from 2 to 4 p.m. in Dunbar Library. The following night, Feb. 23, UAB will haveDerek Hughes for a comedy show in the Student Union Atrium. Hughes will be there from 7 to 8:30 p.m.
