Fourteen organizations, nonprofits and associations, several based in the Dayton area, will participate this year in the annual We Serve U volunteer fair.
This year
Normally, the event would take place in the Student Union's atrium, but due to Covid restrictions, the volunteer fair takes place virtually this year.
Student Involvement and Leadership plans to do this event annually in person if conditions permit.
Informational videos on how to get started volunteering with these organizations are available on the We Serve U Virtual Volunteer Fair website.
Organizations represented include Adaptive Sports Connection, Crayons to Classrooms, Epilepsy Foundation Ohio, Feed the Creek, Girl Scouts of Western Ohio, Miami Valley Pet Therapy Association, Owen’s Place, Rebuilding Together Dayton, SISCA, TRI Ohio, United Rehabilitation Services, United Way and YWCA.
Rebuilding Together Dayton
Rebuilding Together Dayton is just one of the many Dayton-based organizations present at this year's volunteer fair.
“Rebuilding Together Dayton focuses on allowing low-income seniors to continue to age in the home and neighborhood that they love throughout Montgomery County. Many of the homeowners that we serve would not be able to remain in their homes without assistance,” Home Director Caroline Brokaw said.
The organization focuses on repair to homes considering the safety and health needs of the occupants.
“We are making a difference in homeowners' lives and assisting them with home modifications and emergency repairs that they wouldn't be able to or afford to complete. By volunteering with RTD students can make a difference in homeowners' lives throughout Montgomery county,” Brokaw said.
Student opinion
Freshman Angela Davis says she would most likely volunteer with SISCA, Girl Scouts of Western Ohio and YWCA since she has connections to those organizations.
“I think volunteer work is great for everybody because it’s a simple way to get connected to your community while also giving back,” Davis said.
