The Student Government Association’s (SGA) newly elected President Jonathan Ciero leads the student body into a new academic year and a new sense of normalcy.
The new president
Ciero, a junior mechanical engineering major, started his involvement with student affairs early on in his collegiate career. Ciero began as an SGA College of Engineering and Computer Science Senator and shifted to Residential Senator before becoming the Student Body President.
Beyond college, the ambitious junior wants to pursue higher education degrees in aerospace engineering, with hopes of creating a career pathway. However, before Ciero touches the stars he wants to help his fellow Raiders.
“I love helping people...and we [SGA] want to help people have a better time at Wright State,” Ciero said in regards to his motivation for pursuing such a high position within the student body.
Goals for SGA
Top priorities for the new administration include adjusting to the new normal and the return to campus after heavy coronavirus restrictions.
Ciero plans to push initiatives that would increase student involvement while still maintaining a safe campus environment. The young leader plans on working with fellow student organizations like the University Activities Board (UAB) to help plan more in-person events.
“I want to see students back on campus. I want to see clubs back on campus hosting their events with students being involved in those events,” Ciero said.
SGA’s second-highest priority of fostering diversity and inclusivity will continue throughout changes in administration.
Ciero expressed his desire to work with the new Intercultural Specialists and new Vice President for Inclusive Excellence Dr. Matthew Chaney to formulate a plan of inclusivity for the student body.
Ciero also reported goals for the NPHC diversity “Divine Nine” plot completion by homecoming weekend fall 2021.
Challenges and anticipations
Due to the global pandemic and its restrictions and lingering effects, the charismatic leader will face many logistical challenges as well as challenges in raising student morale. Despite challenges posed, Ciero embraces the road ahead, his new responsibility and the new normal.
“I’m excited to see people again, I’m excited to see students back in classrooms, to see professors face-to-face. It’s the people at Wright State that really make the university amazing,” Ciero said.
