A regional collaborative of learning specialists, academic advisors and counselors from six Ohio medical schools has come together through the efforts of an academic advisor at the Wright State Boonshoft School of Medicine.
The group, formally named Ohio Medical School Support Professionals, was started by Joni Trempe, medical education learning specialist at Boonshoft. Trempe created the group to address challenges related to student support, provide greater opportunities and share best practices to support student success, she said. It aims to, “foster and create the best physicians possible.”

“Collaborative sharing of knowledge allows us to stay abreast of new and innovative ways to help Boonshoft students perform well in class and excel on their national board exam,” Trempe said.
Ohio Medical School Support Professionals consists of medical school personnel from the University of Cincinnati, Ohio State University, University of Toledo, Case Western Reserve University and Northeast Ohio Medical University, according to Trempe. “Every person contacted was excited to get a group organized,” she said.
Services the group provides to students include tutoring services, generalized study strategy workshops, national board exam review and preparation and stress management, according to Trempe. Their resources are, “not just for someone that needs to remediate,” Trempe said. “It’s [also] proactive.”

The group’s meetings will be held quarterly at different medical school campuses, according to a press release. Their agenda will be based on relevant contemporary topics for the involved schools, Trempe said.
The collaborative is currently setting the agenda for future meetings and defining its goals as a group, Trempe said. The next meeting will take place this month at Boonshoft; the meeting will focus on coaching and support for first-year medical students, she said in a press release.
