Men's soccer drops third straight

Wright State’s men’s soccer team dropped their third straight home game Saturday, in a 3-0 decision to PAC-12 team San Diego State University.

Even after the loss, Raiders head coach Bryan Davis was particularly upbeat.

“You know what? It’s okay,” Davis said. “The thing about this team is I really do believe in them.”

That’s been a sentiment echoed from Davis all season long, but after a blazing-hot start, the Raiders are now 9-6-1 and 4-3-1 in Horizon League play.

“We’re losing games to teams we think we’re better than. If they believe in themselves, I think it only can produce good things,” Davis said.

San Diego State came into Alumni Field having dropped three games themselves, so the Aztecs may have come to Ohio looking for blood.

“They’re a PAC-12 and they’re used to playing teams that do a lot and they got some confidence because they’ve been getting beaten on by Stanford and Cal,” Davis said. “Give a team like that confidence—we were there. They got a little confidence with the second goal, now we’re pushing for it. Then they get a great goal on the third goal.”

Wright State is currently No. 3 in the conference standings, with two games left on the docket to turn things around before looking ahead to the Horizon League tournament.

“At the end of the day, we have to get in the conference tournament and then we have to win it—that’s our goal, Davis said. “Two weeks from today we can be holding a trophy if we take care of that.”

Davis makes it sound easier than it may be, but the fact that he’s confident in his team will hopefully brew confidence in his players. Losing three games at home can’t be easy to deal with, but Davis’ remedy is having a short memory in terms of coping with a loss like the one they suffered.

“Right now its: Get up tomorrow, look in the mirror and fix what we need to. This is not a game where we need to fix a ton of things—they scored three great goals. Look at the stat sheet.”

Wright State travels to Indiana Tuesday evening to take on IPFW at 6 p.m. before closing out the season at home to Oakland Nov. 6.
