Women's soccer wins back to back games

For their last home game of the regular season the Raiders (6-7-1; Horizon 3-3-1) defeated Cleveland State 2-0 on Wednesday, Oct. 21 at Alumni Field.

The win gives WSU back to back victories for the second time this season.  The first since defeating Belmont and Dayton back in September.

“Cleveland State is a good team,” head coach Pat Ferguson said.  “For us to come off of Saturday’s win and then win this one is not only satisfying but the way we played was satisfying.”

After finding the net twice in the first half against Youngstown State, sophomore mid-fielder Bryce Hueber was in attack mode with a game-high four shot attempts in the half.

Neither team could find the back of the net in the first half despite 17 total shots.  WSU had 10 shot attempts in the half with seven on goal but Vikings goalkeeper Jamie Daniels was there for six of the seven saves.

Senior forward Natalie Sedlock got the Raiders on the board just four minutes into the second half as she head butted a pass by sophomore mid-fielder Sarah Colvin.  The goal tied Sedlock with Hueber for the team lead and marked 10 for her career at WSU.

In the 82nd minute sophomore forward Savannah Carmosino scored her second goal during the winning streak after an assist by senior goal keeper Halle Pyle.

“For as easy as it might have looked, that goal tonight, that’s pretty tough,” Ferguson said.  “You have a lot of time to think about it and sometimes that’s worse.  She did a really good job putting it right in the corner."

The Raiders will be back in action at Green Bay on Sat, Oct 24 for a Horizon League match-up with the Phoenix beginning at 8 p.m.

“We’re playing for our conference tournament lives here,” Ferguson said. “Every win, every point count.  I think we can beat anyone in the league so if we get in we have a chance.”
