Campus Couture: Summer trends you've got to follow

Summer has arrived—the season for pool parties, days spent in the sun and a whole new wardrobe. The world’s largest fashion shows in Milan, Paris, New York and London have revealed the top designers’ spins on classic summer ensembles.

The theme running through nearly every store for young adults is a throwback to the days of flower power and Woodstock: modern hippie chic. The ‘70s have made a comeback and fringed tops, frayed jean shorts and blossoms are all the rage. A loose tank top paired with a high-waisted skirt or pair of shorts creates the ideal hottest outfit for the hottest season. Circle sunglasses are the perfect eyewear for this look and a flowery headband crowning loose locks completes the outfit perfectly. For a little more coverage, loose boho shawls or culotte denim pants reminiscent of bell bottom jeans work just as well for the flirty and fun retro style.

For a more elegant look, some arrange sleek black-and-white combinations. Monochrome garments were a hit at the 2015 Coachella music festival, the event that always shines with big celebrities and bigger fashion trends. Some attendees swapped out the aforementioned fringe and flowers for refined jackets, classy blouses and overall business-like flairs. This timeless look always creates the perfect mix of professional and stylish.

A way to find the balance between elegant and casually cute is to pursue the wildly popular ‘50s aesthetic. Cat-eye glasses, a pleated skirt to mid-calf, short lace dresses with Peter Pan collars, large silky bows—all are a beautiful, fun look for those seeking an appearance more daring and colorful without the casual mien of the ‘70s or the heavy monochrome intensity. Polka dot swim suits and bright lipsticks provide pops of color and style for any beach visit or pool party.

Major designers brought other smaller—but still popular and gorgeous—trends to fashion weeks, including militaristic uniforms, throwbacks to fashion history and feminist twists boasting Girl Power. Add some flair to any style with a Japanese influence, like a chiffon kimono or bold floral designs, or take on a more romantic visual with white, flowing lace. No young adult, though, can go wrong with this season’s biggest catwalk successes: ‘70s retro chic, black-and-white ensembles, and ‘50s feminine combos.
