Fathom Events offers unique movie experiences

Fathom Events presents moviegoers with unique experiences by offering special screenings of movies, concerts, operas and sporting events. Fathom Events is a division of National CineMedia (NCM) networks, which specialize in turning ordinary theaters into one-of-a-kind event centers by broadcasting nontraditional films, sports, concerts, operas and other special events in over 700 theaters in the U.S.

On August 2, Fathom Events coordinated a screening of the Syfy Channel’s “Sharknado” at Regal Cinemas near the Fairfield Commons Mall. “Sharknado,” a science fiction film that had gained notoriety for being bad, drew a crowd.“I thought it was great,” said Wright State alum Brett Oetzel. “I was able to get tickets within short notice and it was fun seeing something on the big screen that didn’t follow the mainstream movie norm.”

Oetzel went on to say that he would be interested in returning for another film or concert screening.

Fathom Events held another event at Regal Cinemas on Aug. 8. The event was a special broadcast of the Drum Corps International competition in Indianapolis, which was about five hours long.

“Not everyone that loves Drum Corps can make it to Indianapolis for the shows,” said Sarah Kenney, an attendee of the screening. “But showing [them] at movie theaters you were able to see the shows but still get that big, loud and in-your-face drum corps experience that we want.”

A third Fathom screening held on August 15 was “Rifftrax Live: Starship Troopers,” a comedy from the makers of the cult television series Mystery Science Theater 3000.

“It was pretty awesome that they could broadcast the event in so many theaters at once without interruption,” said Louie Curren, who attended the screening.

An encore presentation of “Rifftrax Live: Starship Troopers” will be held on Sept. 12 at 7:30 p.m. at Regal Cinemas.
