Spring sports in full-swing for Wright State

While basketball seasons are winding down and the tournaments are in full swing, spring sports have already begun for the Raiders.

The softball team weathered a brutally difficult start to their season playing on the road against Long Beach State, as well as nationally ranked UCLA and Texas A&M. Their record stands at 2-13 overall, but the highlight of the season so far was an extra-inning 11-9 win over Lipscomb in late February.

WSU lead 8-7 in the sixth inning only to surrender two runs and the lead. But heading into the seventh and final inning, Taylor Knore struck a fly ball to the outfield to score Angie Clark sending the game into extras. The Raiders ended up plating two more runs in the seventh to pick up the come from behind win.

The WSU golf team also started the spring portion of their schedule competing in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina for the “Bash at the Beach.” After two days, the Raiders sit tenth out of eleventh place with Paul VanDeventer leading the team shooting a 74 and a 78 in his first two rounds.

The most improved award for the golf team has to go to Nick Capozzoli, who shot an 82 in the first round but found his groove the following day and improved by 11 strokes to shoot a 71.

The golf team still has three invitationals in Virginia, Indiana and Michigan before the Horizon League Championships in April.

The women’s tennis team took care of business their last two games, winning a double-header against Morehead State and Ohio Dominican. The ladies won both matches 6-1 and will take on Oakland University this Saturday at the South Regency Tennis Center in Miamisburg, Ohio.

Not to be outdone, the men’s tennis team also won their past two matches, downing Saint Louis 5-2 and following that win up the next day by defeating Morehead State 6-1.

Next up for the men is a match this Sunday at IUPUI which will be their final tune up before conference play next weekend when UIC comes to town.
