The Wright State Raiders defeat the University of Dayton (UD) Flyers in the Tru by Hilton Beavercreek Invitational on Sunday, Sept. 6 at the Nutter Center.
The battle of the two Dayton teams ultimately ended with the Raiders on top with a 3-2 final.
The first point of the match went to the Raiders, securing the set with a 25-22 finish. In hopes of building momentum, the Raiders found themselves down by 11 points in the second set. However, they responded with a comeback helping them build a streak to make it 17-11 with the Flyers still up. The streak came to an end, giving the Flyers the set, 27-25. The Flyers then secured the third set, 25-22, giving them their second point of the match.
Senior WSU student, Reilly Zegunis, spoke about what helped them win the match.
“We were neck and neck with them the whole time. We had to kick it into extra gear, we talked about that a lot. Just giving everything you can, and we finally decided this is something we want and we are going to get,” Zegunis said.
The Raiders were able to lock it in and secure the fourth set of the match with a 21-25 final, leading to the deciding set of the match. The fifth set ended with a 15-7 score and the Raiders celebrating a local win on their home court.
WSU game leaders included Zegunis, alongside senior Mya Ayro, junior Katie Sowko and junior Haley Robinson. More game leaders can be found here.
Robinson spoke on what helped build her momentum in the game.
“We came together as a team, we had a hard weekend, but we showed up today,” Robinson said. “Let’s just play and fight and we ended up coming back."
The Raiders play again at the Pittsburgh tournament where they will have a rematch with Pitt who beat WSU last year, 1-3 in the Tru by Hilton Beavercreek invitational.
Head coach Travers Green spoke on what is to come in this tournament.
“We want to push our limits and see how good we are,” Green said. “It's about fine tuning some things and then reminding ourselves of the things we're good at and playing to those strengths as well."
WSU will return to the court on Sept. 13 playing in the Pittsburgh Tournament Sept. 11-13, the times and opponents can be found here.
