On Sept. 10, Hawthorn Hall had an incident of rape. The incident took place at 1:30 p.m. Due to the nature of the case, more information is not available, but the case is still ongoing.
The Honors Hall residential hall saw a case of telephone harassment and sexual offenses against a minor. The incident took place on Sept. 6 at approximately 11:40 a.m. This case is also ongoing.
The next day, Sept. 7, a case of theft occurred in Honors Hall at 10 p.m. The incident resulted in an arrest made by the Wright State University Police Department (WSUPD).
Finally, a traffic accident occurred in Parking Lot 14, or the Creative Arts Center parking lot, on Sept. 5. WSUPD arrived on scene at 8 a.m. No one was injured during the accident.
Red Zone
Wright State, like all other colleges in America, are currently in what is known as the Red Zone.
The Red Zone is a 6 to 10 week period when sexual related crimes are at the highest. This timeframe is typically between the first day of classes to Thanksgiving. Data shows that over 50% of any sex-based crime that happens on a college campus can happen during this time.
There are several factors that can lead to this type of crime. More people are on campus at a time, newfound independence that freshman receive, and an increase in partying and substance use can contribute to this.
Sexual crimes are never the fault of the victim; the blame will always lie on the perpetrator. While no precaution can prevent sexual crimes entirely, experts from CAASE and John Hopkins University recommend a few safety practices to help reduce risk.
If something feels wrong or someone feels suspicious, trust your gut and leave the situation.
If you choose to drink, keep your drink with you.
Avoid accepting drinks from people you do not know.
Use the buddy system or travel in groups at night to reduce being alone.
Limit how many people know your current/live location on campus.
Understand what clear consent is.
If someone is too intoxicated to consent or is not clearly and enthusiastically agreeing, do not engage in sexual activity with them.
If you happen to witness a crime, it is also recommended that you step in, alert authorities and help the victim in any way you can.
