The Wright State University (WSU) dance team traveled to Orlando, Florida, to compete in the College Classic. The team competed against numerous collegiate programs, showcasing their skills on a national stage.
The competition took place in Florida from April 10 to 12 and showcased many colleges dance and cheer teams. College teams consisted of Division I (D1) large schools, small schools and all other divisions, including Junior Colleges (JUCO).
The College Classic is a national championship competition giving collegiate dance teams the opportunity to showcase the skills they have and the hard work they have put into their team. This competition highlights dance, cheer and even mascots with professional judges rating and ranking their performances.
WSU competed in the D1 small team performance with a routine called “Little Girl Gone” and placed fourth. They also competed in small hip-hop with a performance called “Where the Party At?” which placed ninth.
For WSU’s final performance, they went all out and competed with the WSU cheer team. Even Rowdy made an appearance for the Super Spirit Showdown Game Day, which placed third, making it WSU's best performance for the competition.
Bri Chan, a dance major and a part of the WSU dance team, expressed what it was like to showcase these skills as a WSU Raider.
“Representing [WSU] on a national stage means everything to me. It’s about showing who we are, how hard we’ve worked and how much we’ve grown as a program. As a club sport, it makes it even more meaningful; it shows that anything is possible when you put in the work and believe in what you’re building," Chan said. "We’re not just another school. We’ve earned our place, and we carry that with pride. Being able to represent our university and show what Raider pride truly means is something I’ll never take for granted.”
Alongside many other accomplishments, the WSU dance team has worked hard to showcase its skills this season. The team made an appearance in Philadelphia with the men's basketball team in March Madness, performing on televisions nationwide, and put on performances all season long with the men’s basketball team.
Chan reflected on this season and all the hard work and dedication their team put in for this College Classic.
“There were a lot of emotional moments throughout the event, definitely some tears along the way. In those moments, supporting each other became the most important thing. Everyone handles pressure and emotions differently, so it was about being there for each other in whatever way was needed. Whether it was a hug, words of encouragement or just standing by their side so no one felt alone, we made sure to lift each other up. That love, trust and support carried us through the hardest moments and made the experience even more meaningful," Chan said.
