Wright State University (WSU) men's basketball has put up a tough fight for the first-place seed in the Horizon League. With the Raiders recent games and performances, it has earned them a spot in College Insider's Mid-Major Top 25 rankings.
WSU ranked in the 23rd spot of College Insider's Mid-Major Top 25, along with 24 other teams from different leagues. The rankings were determined by a panel of voters, giving points to the corresponding teams.
With these rankings, it is important to know what a mid-major team consists of and why they are recognized.
“We define mid-major programs as any team from a conference outside of the ACC, Big Ten, Big 12, SEC and Big East," the Mid-Major Basketball website says.
On the College Insider website, the deciders of the rankings are highlighted.
“Please remember that this is not some random opinion. Rather, it is the judgment of our esteemed voting panel that is composed of some of the leading experts on the sport,” the website reads.
WSU has been fighting to secure the number one spot in the Horizon League, which has been going back and forth with Oakland University. Recently WSU secured that number one spot and is now improving to new rankings, such as the Mid Major Top 25.
There are no other teams in the Horizon League that are ranked in the Top 25 Mid-Major teams, but they are contenders and are receiving votes and points.
The head coach for the WSU men’s basketball team, Clint Sargent, talked about what the team needs to do to improve.
“I don’t think we’ve played our best basketball, and we’ve not played a full 40 minutes and when we do I think we got a heck of a team," Sargent said.
In the most recent update of College Insider's Mid-Major Top 25 teams, WSU was not featured, coming off their loss from Detroit Mercy. They were, however, mentioned as having 49 points, putting them as one of the contenders again.
If WSU is able to apply changes and secure wins in their final weeks of the season, they may be able to make their way back to the top 25 ranking. There is still a chance that WSU may find their rank even higher than 23rd.
