Behind the Headlines: Meet News Reporter Ashley Hainzer

Ashley Hainzer, the News Reporter for The Wright State Guardian, is committed to accurate narratives and investigative reporting. Her work has led her to increased confidence in herself, and coverage of essential topics.

"I like getting to the bottom of things and writing the truth," Hainzer said. "I love the feeling of digging to investigate something and make sense out of it."

Hainzer is a junior student majoring in English education at Wright State University (WSU). For her, journalism has been more than an extracurricular activity; it was where she found her voice.

She has spent all three of her undergraduate years at The Guardian, covering some of the publication's most challenging stories. From covering breaking college news to collecting crime logs, her name may be recognizable for readers.

Her primary duties include reporting on important campus events, creating in-depth news pieces and working as the beat reporter for the daily crime log, faculty senate and Board of Trustees meetings.

One of Hainzer's most memorable events occurred last year, when she participated in The Guardian's live election results broadcast in collaboration with the campus radio station. The long, fast-paced night had a lasting impact.

"It was a really interesting experience, and I enjoyed working with people I wouldn't have communicated with otherwise. It pushed me out of my comfort zone in the best way," Hainzer said.

She attributes her experience at The Guardian with not just boosting her writing abilities but also altering her personally. When she initially joined, she regarded herself as timid, preferring to be quiet in gatherings. Performing interviews has boosted Hainzer's confidence and professionalism.

"Being a member of The Guardian has snatched me by my hair and forcibly dragged me out of my shell," Hainzer said. "I am way more confident than I was when I first joined."

Hainzer believes she has learned how to manage diverse personalities and present herself professionally through newsroom teamwork and frequent communication with sources, administrators and coworkers. She feels her interpersonal abilities will help her succeed as a future educator.

"I think my time at WSU will help me be prepared for the future because it has given me the overall tools to develop professionally. The Guardian itself has taught me amazing time management skills and the ins and outs of AP style," Hainzer said.

Outside of the world of journalism, Hainzer identifies herself as a nerd who is passionate about anime, comics and cosplay. She attends conventions three to four times a year, where she frequently reconnects with online friends she met through fandom communities. She also enjoys reading and cooking in her spare time.

Hainzer is confident that the lessons she has learned at WSU and The Guardian will accompany her wherever she goes.
