The Internet's Favorite Holiday: Spotify Wrapped Season

The most wonderful time of the year is here— Spotify Wrapped, or Apple Music Replay, depending on which you prefer. The Wright State Guardian posted Instagram surveys to get Wright State University (WSU) students' listening data, so it is time to dissect this year’s listeners' top artists, albums and listening age.

What makes this time of year so exciting and talked about is that it is likely that nobody has the same Wrapped. Seeing your results can be exciting, not only for yourself, but also for others around you. Listeners are also able to express themselves through Spotify Wrapped. Music can say a lot about listeners and seeing what other around you listen to can help you discover new artists or songs.

Spotify Wrapped not only reveals to people what you listen to, but it also provides details about personal habits that may have been overlooked during the year. Many users are astonished by their Wrapped findings, which may reflect music tastes they seldom discuss.

Wrapped encapsulates every musical phase a listener has gone through in a given year, from surprising throwbacks to guilty pleasure musicians and movie soundtracks. It even expands past what a person has listened to, also including fun chapters like listening age.

Many people had a listening age that was far off from their actual age; WSU student answers included 38 and 76, but some also got ages like 21, showing that for some listeners, their ages were accurate. Overall, listening age was a widely discussed and entertaining part of this year's Wrapped.

If none of this sounds familiar, you may be on the Apple Music wave. While Apple does show your top artists and songs, all the fun designs and personality Spotify gives listeners is unique to their platform. So, if you feel left out from the discussion of listening age and excitement of Wrapped, it might be a sign to switch over to Spotify so you can join the fun next year.

From The Guardian's surveys, the results showed that one of the most popular number one artists was the one and only Taylor Swift. Other top artists included Bad Bunny, Drake and The Weekend. Some honorable mentions include Lorde, Playboi Carti, Twenty-One Pilots, FROG and Magdalena Bay.

The top albums and songs are another widely talked about aspect. According to the surveys on Wrapped, popular albums to be "DebÍ Tirar Más Fotos," "KPop Demon Hunter," "Hit Me Hard and Soft," "SOS Deluxe: LANA" and "Short n’ Sweet." Popular songs included "Die with a Smile," "That’s So True," "Ordinary" and "Back to Friends."

Spotify does not stop at recapping musical habits; it also lists your top podcasts and audiobooks. Many people use calming noises to fall asleep, and those streams will show up in Wrapped, whether you want them to or not.

Part of what makes Spotify Wrapped so entertaining is how suddenly "10 Hours of Calming Ocean Sounds" ends up as your number one podcast. It can be funny, a little embarrassing and, honestly, the best part of Wrapped season for many individuals is seeing other people’s guilty pleasures.

Overall, Spotify Wrapped is the perfect time of year to start conversations, learn more about people, discover new music and even laugh at yourself. Whether you are proudly showing off your Wrapped and bragging about your top artist or reluctantly revealing it to your friends, remember that nobody’s Wrapped will be the same. The uniqueness is what makes it fun, and why listeners look forward to it every year.
