WSU's Rainbow Alliance continues to promote inclusion and support for LGBTQ+ students through weekly meetings, campus activities and lobbying work. Rainbow Group Therapy was set on Oct. 22 with the goal of strengthening community ties and fostering understanding across campus.
History of Rainbow Alliance
Rainbow Alliance was founded over a year ago and has progressively increased its membership and exposure. Its aim is to build community, share resources, facilitate communication and collaboration, provide a welcoming environment as well as advocate for equality of the LGBTQ+ community and its supporters. The club's weekly meetings allow students to share their experiences, debate current topics and organize outreach projects.
It is an organization committed to creating a culture in which all people may flourish, regardless of sexual orientation, gender identity or expression.
They strive constantly to enhance fairness and equality. They engage with local governments, companies and educational institutions to eliminate discriminatory practice and develop policies that defend LGBTQ+ rights. Beyond legislative framework, they advocate for an inclusive culture in which diversity is not just acknowledged but cherished.
They believe that information is a strong force for change and their dedication to education goes beyond exposing misconceptions and prejudices. They also offer tools, workshops and forums to help people better understand the LGBTQ+ community's unique experiences. The Rainbow Alliance website provides additional resources and information about their outreach efforts.
Building a safe place
Rainbow Alliance is a strong advocate for LGBTQ+ inclusiveness on campus providing education, advocacy and community to students of all identities. The group seeks to foster a friendly atmosphere through open conversation, peer assistance and campus-wide activities.
Several freshmen opted to attend the LGBTQ+ community-organized event because they wanted to learn more, express their support and network with fellow students.
Aaron Smith a freshman english student attended the club to learn more about the organization and its mission.
"I thought it was a good way to understand different experiences and meet new people," Smith said. "I wanted to be part of something that promotes acceptance and helps everyone feel included on campus."
Rowan Straughter, a president of LGBTQ+ club, is a strong supporter of inclusiveness, diversity and student representation on campus. Under their guidance, the club has worked to build a safe and supportive environment in which students of all identities can express themselves and find community.
"Our mission is to promote understanding and acceptance," said Straughter. Counseling for Rainbow Therapy group will be conducted on Oct. 22, Straughter added.
Rae Carson, vice president of club, helps coordinate meetings, manage outreach programs and ensure that every member feels heard and included. Together, they strive to make the organization a welcoming and empowering community for students of all backgrounds. Their teamwork has strengthened the club's presence on campus and amplified its mission of promoting equality and awareness.
The group serves a crucial role in connecting students who are new to school or visiting for the first time. "It's not just about events; it's about building a network of people who understand and support one another," Carson said.
The Rainbow Alliance is also working with The Office of Student Involvement and Leadership to enhance visibility of gender-neutral resources on campus, including restroom access and inclusive housing options.
Students interested in joining the group can visit 029D in The Student Union and attend meetings where discussion ranges from identity and activism to campus safety and mental health.
"The more students who get involved, the stronger our community becomes," Straughter said.
