On Monday, Sept. 1, Student Involvement and Leadership and the Division of Student Affairs hosted Best Weekend Ever! Labor Day of Service, where students came together to clean up the Spring House Park in Beavercreek for their community.
Giving back
The students of Give Together Grow Together brought students together to give back to their community on Labor Day by picking up trash, trimming branches and removing debris from the park trail.
On Monday morning, the students gathered at the park and were given gloves and tools to beautify our community. This event was an opportunity for students to earn service hours, but also to come together for the betterment of the city.
Olivia McCloskey, a psychology student in her third year at Wright State University, is a part of the group Give Together Grow Together and attended the event.
“I’m always looking for ways to give back to my community and grow as an individual. I also love getting to meet students outside of my own organizations,” McCloskey said.
For many, giving back to the community is important and valuable. Not only does it earn them community service experience, but it is also a way to make their communities around them a place of peace and beauty.
Susan Irumva is a senior elementary education student at WSU who currently serves as president of Chi Alpha Christian Ministries and participates in the Give Together Grow Together group on campus.
“Parks are a place for rest and peace, and I’m glad we could clear the paths so others can enjoy their trail experience,” Irumva said.
Continuing the fun
After the event, students came together at the Forest Lane Community Center for a cookout and games.
They had hot dogs, cornhole games going on and spent time getting to know one another further. It was an opportunity for students to bond and understand each others' groups more.
“I really enjoyed it! It was fun serving alongside other Raiders, meeting new people, and connecting with student organizations I hadn’t heard of before,” Irumva said.
This event not only brought people together to serve the community of Fairborn, but also expanded students' relationships with one another through acts of service.
