Wright State University provides a diverse set of free fitness classes to students, including yoga, swimming, weight training and walking programs. There is something for everyone, no matter what fitness level you are at.
Staying healthy as a student in college
Staying in shape is important for everybody's health. Being able to stay active can be extremely beneficial for a college student. Campus fitness classes provide an accessible and social way for students to maintain their physical wellness while managing academic demands.
The CDC talks about physical activity for college students,
“Physical inactivity is a public health concern and contributes to chronic diseases such as obesity, cardiovascular disease, and diabetes. Evidence supports a strong correlation between physical activity (PA) and long-term health benefits, such as increased longevity and improved quality of life," the CDC stated.
Students should use the fitness classes WSU offers. With all these free options available, everyone can find something they like to do. Starting these healthy habits in college will help you stay fit for your future.
Group cycling fitness class
WSU offers two cycling classes with separate instructors who each play their own style of music. Both classes are extremely high energy and make a great way to start or end your day. These cycling sessions provide an intense workout while keeping things fun with upbeat music.
Senior group cycle instructor and accounting major Carlee Herath talked about the class she teaches.
“It’s a good place to stay fit. When you’re in college, you’re stressed out because you have so much [going on] and I think the exercise is one of the things that makes me feel so much better. [It helps control] my stress, anxiety and it’s also a place to make friends, meet new people and get out of your comfort zone," Herath said.
Herath’s insight shows how these classes offer more than just physical fitness- they provide stress relief and social connections that college students need. This class is a great class for beginners as it is welcoming and fun.
Fitness class options for everyone
WSU also offers other fitness classes like lift labs, beginner swimming, different types of yoga and even a walk and roll fitness class. No matter how you like to work out, or even if you do not, there is something for starters or people just looking to join a free fitness class.
“Campus Recreation is dedicated to providing quality recreational opportunities for the [WSU] community. Whether you enjoy working out in our fitness center or prefer hiking through the Grand Canyon, we have something for you. So if you're looking for a way to relieve stress, stay in shape and make new friends then check out Campus Recreation," the website reads.
