On Thursday, Sept. 4, the Amigos Latino Students Association hosted its first event of the year, La Comida. This event was hosted to bring everyone on campus together through food and to share their culture with all who attended.
Amigos Latinos Students Association
The Amigos Latino Students Association is an organization on campus that brings together students of all backgrounds. They strive to build a community where people can come together through Latino culture and history, while also being a place where all are welcome.
Jesus Carachure Jacobo is a sophomore at Wright State University majoring in International Business. He is the president of ALSA.
“I like to think of Amigos Latinos as a family,” Jacobo said. “I feel like at the core of it, this is truly home away from home.”
The organization hosts a series of events each year, one of them being La Comida, which translates to "the food." This is a way for people to come together through food, as eating is often something that brings communities and families together.
Emma Doci is a fourth-year double-major in biochemistry and molecular biology and international business.
“We’re meeting a bunch of new people and talking with them and eating ice cream,” Doci said. “Everybody is so nice and welcoming.”
During ALSA's La Comida event, students from diverse backgrounds came together for a fun-filled day of games, music and delicious food.
Through all of their events, they strive to be a support system for students and give them a place where they can feel that sense of belonging and family when coming to WSU.
Lucas Smith is a sophomore Criminal Justice major with a minor in forensics who discussed how the event went.
“I liked how welcoming people are, and it's a good atmosphere,” Smith said.
Changes to campus
With the new changes coming to campus due to the Ohio Senate Bill 1, concerns about Diversity, Equity and Inclusion programs and groups have grown around campus. Although the multiple Cultural Identity Centers in the Student Union were closed due to this bill, organizations on campus are still thriving and hosting events.
Amigos Latinos plans to continue with their program and host events throughout the year to continue to bring all students together through different backgrounds. Luckily, with being a student organization, the bill does not affect their organization.
Due to the bill, much of the support that was given to these organizations on campus was taken away. This means each group is in the process of finding ways to continue their organizations. Student organizations are all looking to continue with their unique programs and events they implement through their organizations.
The Amigo Latinos Student Association plans to host more events throughout the year. For more information of these events, you find them on Engage.
