Students can expect a fresh vibe and a creative space in Blue Sky Coffee, which will start welcoming customers in November.

About the owner

Matthew Stevenson is the owner of Blue Sky Coffee and works as a music therapist through the week. Growing up, his parents loved to cook and host people in their home. Gathering around food, beverage and good people has been a staple of Stevenson’s life, making a coffee shop the perfect gateway into a fulfilling business.

Originally from Chicago and living in Dayton since 2014, Stevenson was able to land a spot in the Wright State University Foundation building. Despite the paperwork and red tape behind owning a business, Stevenson has cultivated a premise for a vibrant local shop.

Innovation and creativity

Stevenson drew on the rich history of innovation in Dayton to foster ideas with other creatives, including Phil O’Neal and Ryan Stoneberger, to open a coffee shop. O’Neal helped with front-end work, including the equipment and blend of the coffee, while Stoneberger helped with the creative aspects, including the logo, of the shop.

“The idea of Blue Sky Coffee comes from Blue Sky ideas, which is a concept of limitless creativity and just brainstorming with no limit,” Stevenson described.

Stevenson hopes to honor the history of Dayton while also inspiring new ideas for the “next big thing.”

The menu, space and student discounts

Visitors can expect the classic offerings of lattes, cappuccinos, espresso shots and drip coffee as well as a Blue Sky blend, which will rotate through different creations. Stevenson also plans to partner with local bakeries to offer bagels, muffins and coffee cakes, among other sweet treats.

The walls of Blue Sky Coffee will be writable to inspire creativity and collaboration as a flexible space.

“I want to be not only showcasing different stuff that's happened in the city but also be a space for people to create art,” Stevenson said.

Stevenson also plans to host events in the space, such as music nights, poetry nights and even STEM group nights so that everyone can utilize the space to its full potential. Blue Sky’s website also provides a calming purpose to the space, turning coffee into a companion.

“Coffee is there reminding us to relax, celebrate a job well done and rejuvenate ourselves on our creative journeys,” the website reads.

Stevenson hopes to offer student discounts as well. While there is no official open date for Blue Sky Coffee, Stevenson plans to open its doors in November.
