On Aug. 20, Wright State Communication alerted the Dayton campus of an armed robbery near the Peppertree Villas Apartments.

“The suspect was described as an African-American male, around 5'4" tall, medium build, wearing a black ski mask, black beanie and a black sweatshirt,” the email reads.

National

Death toll rises above 100 in Maui wildfires

The death toll of the Maui wildfires has reached 111 as of Aug. 16, according to Hawaii Governor Josh Green’s Facebook page, where the governor is providing updates about housing responses, relief status and casualties. Green has partnered with the hotel industry to relocate 400 survivors who have been displaced due to wildfire damage, as stated in a press release from the governor’s office.

According to an Aug. 18 Associated Press release, the head of the Maui Emergency Management Agency, Herman Andaya, resigned amidst tension after not using warning sirens to alert citizens about the wildfires. 

Hurricane Hilary to reach California

According to the National Hurricane Center and Central Pacific Hurricane Center, heavy rainfall from Hurricane Hilary will reach the Baja California Peninsula and into the southwestern part of the United States on Aug. 20.

“In the Southwestern United States, flash, urban and arroyo flooding is expected, with dangerous and locally catastrophic impacts likely,” the NHC website reads

Despite the National Weather Service’s downgrade of Hurricane Hilary to Category 1, heavy flooding and wind remain large threats to the southwest.

On Aug. 20, Spain and England went head-to-head in the FIFA Women’s World Cup final with Spain winning its first cup ever. Captain Olga Carmona scored the single, game-winning goal to secure the Spaniard win 1-0.
