As the 2020 Election draws near, polling locations statewide are being announced. This year, Wright State University’s (WSU) Nutter Center has been selected as a polling location for area residents.
How to vote in Ohio
In order to vote in Ohio, residents must be 18 on the day of or the day after the election, be a United States citizen and be an Ohio resident for at least 30 days. Criminal history may also impact a citizen’s eligibility to vote.
Residents are required to be registered to vote 30 days before the election. Early voting in person began Oct. 6 and runs until Nov. 2. The Nutter Center is not included as an early voting center in Ohio.
College students have the following options for Election Day voting (more info can be found at the Ohio Secretary of State Website):
- Requesting an absentee ballot from your county board of elections and voting by mail.
- Voting in person in the 28 days before a primary or general election at your home county board of elections if you will not be at home on Election Day,
- Or, if you will be at home on Election Day, going to your assigned polling location for your home precinct.
In most cases, students who do not reside in Greene County, OH outside of the academic year will be voting through an absentee ballot.
Nutter Center voting
Since polls tend to rotate throughout the state by year, WSU’s Nutter Center has not always been a polling location on Election Day.
“In year’s past, voting has taken place in the Nutter Center’s Berry Room. This year it will take place on the concourse,” said Marketing Manager of the WSU Nutter Center Misty Cox. We’ve not been a consistent polling location because of previously booked events that sometimes conflict with election dates.”
The WSU community has expressed their excitement at having the Nutter Center as a poll center on Nov. 3.
“The Nutter Center provides accessibility to students and the surrounding community,” said former SGA President Ivan Mallet. “Plenty of space for social distancing to make sure everyone can vote safely!”
Even students who do not plan to vote in person are sharing their excitement at the news.
“I am doing an absentee ballot this time around, but this couldn’t be any more convenient if someone wanted to vote in person!” said Guardian Media Group social media assistant Clare O’Toole.
Election Day is Nov. 3 with in-person polls open from 6 a.m until 7:30 p.m.
