"Tunnel Takeover": 5K to pave way for scholarships

Arrows are lining the cement pathways throughout the tunnels and there’s a good reason for it.

The Tunnel Takeover 5K started at 1:30 this afternoon in the Millett Hall atrium and is set to end in the Student Union atrium. Although this is the first year for the event, those who created it are hoping to make it an annual one which will improve and grow each year.

The funds acquired from the 5K will go to the Wright State University Foundation to help establish scholarships for those who need them. Small programs and other needs will also be helped by the funds. The goal for the first year is $5,000.

The Tunnel Takeover 5K event highlights the resource that the campus has in the transportation between college buildings and has a goal of helping students to learn more about philanthropic work.

Kari Simpson, a graduate student at Wright State University, is the point person for this helpful event. This 5K was created to go along with the Rise. Shine. Campaign that Wright State has been announcing alongside the notable Tom Hanks. “All the funds raised by the different teams are going to program funds and scholarships of their choice here on campus,” Simpson said.

Simpson also noted on the date set for the 5K, “We decided to do this in February to include our campus in the events and activities of Student Engagement and Philanthropy Month (SEP) in partnership with Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE).” Being that the, hopefully annual, event is being held in February, it’s quite fitting that it is located in the walkway of Wright State University’s tunnel system.
