Despite the snow, the LEAP intensive English program took a mid-winter excursion to the Kettering Rec Center to ice-skate. Students from all across the globe—from Saudi Arabia to Portugal—tested their skating abilities, many for the first time.
Senior lecturer and Director of the LEAP program Jeannette Horwitz said that ice-skating has become a LEAP tradition.
“We go ice skating every winter since many of our students come from countries like Saudi Arabia and Kuwait with no winter. We like to do things that are typical to this region that perhaps they wouldn’t be able to do at home,” Horwitz said.
Muhammad Aloufi from Jeddah, Saudi Arabia was one of the many LEAP students participating in the event.
“I have been skating in Chicago and New York,” Aloufi said. “This is my third time. I like skating, but I am not a professional. I’m not doing well yet,” Aloufi said. “Just practice.”
LEAP activities are open to American WSU students who wish to learn about other cultures and make international friends. Two of such programs include English tutoring and becoming a conversation partner. Students may inquire in the LEAP office for more information.
