Club Hockey: Redhawks blowout, blank Raiders during two game series

It was a rough weekend for the Wright State men’s hockey team, who lost twice to Miami University by a combined score of 18-0 in a two-game home-at-home series played Friday and Saturday night.

“With the first two weekends of tough teams, it gives drive for our freshman and new players to build,” WSU assistant coach Ernie DiMuccio said. “Even though the score doesn’t show it, we played better than the Bowling Green series”.

The Raiders used a split goalie line-up in order to build experience for two of their freshmen goalkeepers, Nick Spicker and Ryan Terrian. Out of 21 shots, Spicker managed to save 16, but allowed 5 in Friday night’s match. Terrian saw 19 shots, saved 16 and allowed 3.

“Both keepers looked well, there are some goals they want back, but they are learning from the pace of the game,” DiMuccio said. “This weekend helps, one of the freshmen will have to step in for our league games and they both showed they could play.”

With the Raiders depth in new players, a lot has been going into learning the structure and making corrections during game film and practice.

“I think the biggest thing for the team is learning the system and implementing that in the game,” DiMuccio said. “We watch the games filmed and can see it then, but it’s not as obvious while they are on the ice.”

The test of tough teams continues for WSU heading into October, with the Dayton Flyers on Friday night at the Kettering Recreation Center, which plays as home to both teams. This will be the first game of the season for the Flyers and they will play as the away team.

The Raiders will then have a road trip of three league match-ups against University of Pittsburgh, West Virginia and Indiana.

Despite the poor start to the season, DiMuccio remains optimistic that the young Raiders can rectify their errors by relying on their talent.

“I think overall we are far and away better than this time last season,” DiMuccio said. “We are young, but have a lot of skill, we will learn from our mistakes.”
