“I am sorry a student was hit by a car and that circumstances exist that would allow such a tragedy to occur,” said Wright State University Student Government President Joseph Gibbons in reference to a pedestrian hit by a car on the crosswalk between the Student Union and Lot 4 on Tuesday, November 13th. “We send our condolences to the victim and will do everything in our power to protect the safety of the students at Wright State and will explore all of our options in working to make sure this never happens again,” Gibbons said.
“Students and visitors are entitled to a sense of safety and security on campus, and Student Government has worked over the past two years – and will continue working in the future – to protect students. Last year we passed a resolution that would increase the number of blue safety phone kiosks in parking lots and dark areas and I worked with the Beavercreek City Council to enhance safety lighting on the pedestrian walkway that will span I-675,” said Spencer Brannon, Student Government Chief of Staff.
“We are so sorry that this could happen on campus. We will look into every feasible solution – from increased lighting to more conspicuous signage to better enforcement of speed limits on University Boulevard – to see what we can do to change the circumstances so this never happens again,” Brannon explained further.
Last year, Student Government, led by current Speaker of the House of Representatives Abigail Galligan, created a campus safety committee to explore ways to increase student safety on campus. Results of that committee’s meetings included a resolution that would increase blue safety phone locations on campus and increasing access to safety phones in the tunnels on campus. Student Government will host a public forum on Tuesday, November 27th at 7:00 in E157 to discuss and explore ways to increase safety on campus, specifically in crosswalk and pedestrian zones.
