There were several instances of larceny and car crimes reported on campus for the days of Nov. 27 to Dec. 4.
On Dec. 1, from 8:30 a.m. to 2:54 p.m., larceny theft was reported in the area between 2100 College Park and the Honors residential building. According to reports, The Wright State University Police Department (WSUPD), responded to claims of a misused credit card. It is unclear if any charges were filed.
Property damage was reported out of Springwood Lane. The criminal mischief or vandalism occurred on campus between Monday, Dec. 1, at approximately 2:40 p.m. to Tuesday, Dec. 2, at 12:15 a.m. WSUPD did a full investigation on the situation, but all leads were exhausted.
Dec. 3, another count of larceny was reported out of the same area. In this instance, it appears to be a late report, as the daily crime log shows the incident occurred from Sept. 29 at 4:31 p.m. to Nov. 29 at 4:01 p.m. This crime was investigated, but all leads were exhausted.
A car theft was reported out of the College Park Apartments. This occurred between the hours of Dec. 1 at 8 p.m. and Dec. 2 at 9:48 a.m. This is still an open investigation.
Additionally, in The Woods Residential Community, larceny theft from a car was reported, happening between 4:39 p.m. and 4:51 p.m. on Dec. 2. This crime was investigated, though it is unclear whether the perpetrator was caught.
Lastly, another ongoing investigation is out of The Village Apartments, where two separate individuals reported to WSUPD that their catalytic converters were stolen from their cars. These crimes are suspected to have occurred between Dec. 4 at 1:30 p.m. to Dec. 5 at 6:48 a.m.
In a statement to The Wright State Guardian, WSUPD Police Chief Kurt Holden acknowledged the uptick in car-related crimes. Holden maintained that WSUPD takes these seriously.
“Recently, we have had a few vehicle-related incidents, and we're paying close attention to them. While these cases are fairly uncommon at [WSU], we take each one very seriously and have already increased patrols' visibility in areas where these incidents occurred to stay ahead of any patterns,” Holden said. “[WSUPD] remains engaged, proactive and committed to keeping our campus safe.”
Chief Holden recommended that students remove valuable items from their cars, lock vehicle doors when not in use and immediately report any shady activity.
If students have a concern or something to report, they are encouraged to call WSUPD at (937) 775-2111.
