Charlie Kirk, 31, a close ally of President Donald Trump and co-founder of Turning Point USA, was shot and killed earlier today during a presentation at Utah Valley University.
What happened?
During a Q&A session at Utah Valley University, Kirk was fatally shot in the neck. He was at the university as the first tour stop in his "American Comeback Tour," a tour to visit at least 14 universities around the U.S. this fall. This tour was to represent Turning Point USA, a conservative youth organization founded by Kirk.
Eva Terry, who was there to witness the shooting, discussed with CNN what exactly had happened.
“A kid came up and he asked a question about how many transgender shooters there were, and Charlie gave him another comment. And then he asked one more question, and so the question was about shooters. And before Charlie Kirk could pick up the mic again, that’s when the shot happened,” Terry said.
He was shot on the campus of Utah Valley University. While there is currently no suspect, all resources are being used to identify the individual who shot him.
Despite traveling with private security, multiple eyewitnesses agree that there were no security measures to enter the event. According to one source who talked with CNN, the event had no metal detectors or bag checks.
University spokesperson Ellen Treanor, stated that: "There is no suspect in custody, it is an active investigation."
At the moment, four agencies are actively investigating the incident. These agencies are: Orem Police, Utah Valley University Police, the F.B.I. and the Utah Department of Public Safety.
The university has since closed its campus and cancelled all classes until further notice.
As of writing this, there are no updates on if a suspect has been detained. This piece will be updated as more information comes out.
