2014 was the year of book-to-movie adaptations, and that trend doesn’t seem to be losing steam. There are several highly anticipated films set to hit theaters this year that have been adapted from literature; so, without further adieu, here’s a list of some of the books that will be introduced to the big screen in 2015. Fifty Shades of Grey
L. James’ controversial novel, derived originally from a Twilight fanfiction, follows Anastasia Steele, a naive college who agrees to conduct an interview with businessman Christian Grey has a favor to her roommate. What starts off as a favor for a friend evolves into a sexual relationship of explosive proportions. Fifty Shades of Grey, easily being one of the most controversial films that will debut this year, stars Jamie Dornan as Christian Grey and Dakota Johnson as Anastasia Steele. The steamy erotica will hit theatres on February 13. Insurgent In the second book of Veronica Roth’s Divergent trilogy, a war brews among the five factions of dystopian Chicago. Tris Prior pledges to fight for justice and for the safety of those she loves while questioning the world she knew. In this sequel to 2014’s box office buster Divergent, Shailene Woodley will reprise her role as Tris Prior, alongside Theo James as Four and Ansel Elgort as Caleb Prior. Insurgent will premiere on March 20. The Hunger Games: Mockingjay In the epic conclusion of Suzanne Collins’ Hunger Games trilogy, Katniss Everdeen, contestant in the 74 and 75 annual Hunger Games, is the face of a rebellion war that seeks to end the capital’s rule over the districts of Panem once and for all. Mockingjay was split into two parts, the first part having already premiered in November of last year. Mockingjay Part II will conclude this film franchise with the majority of the cast coming back to reprise their roles one last time, including Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson, and Liam Hemsworth on November 20. Paper Towns In John Green’s third young adult novel, Quentin “Q” Jacobsen goes off on a laborous quest to find clues on the whereabouts of Margo Roth Spiegelman, Q’s childhood friend and teenage dream, when she mysteriously goes missing. Paper Towns is set to hit theaters on June 5 and will star Nat Wolff as Q and Cara Delevingne as Margo. The Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials James Dashner’s second book in The Maze Runner trilogy follows Thomas and his fellow Gladers search for clues on an organization called W.C.K.D. On their search, the group is completely thrown off its game when they find themselves in The Scorch, a dangerous land full of obstacles. Dylan O’Brien will come back as Thomas, with Kaya Scodelario and Ki Hong Lee being among the many to co-star in the film. The Scorch Trials will meet the big screen on September 18. Frankenstein In the familiar early 1800’s horror story written by Mary Shelley, Victor Frankenstein, a crooked scientist, conducts an experiment that allows him to bring the dead back to life. However, the story takes a turn when the “Frankenstein Monster” learns of his upbringing. Overcome by grief and rejection, he seeks revenge by targeting Victor’s family. Frankenstein has been retold time and time again in films, plays, comics, and even through video games. However, the new film adaptation, Victor Frankenstein, tells the story from Igor’s, Victor Frankenstein’s assistant, perspective. The horror film will premiere on October 2 and star Daniel Radcliffe as Igor and James McAvoy as Victor Frankenstein.
