Local band celebrating their CD release with a concert

Dayton rockers Motel Beds will celebrate the release of their most recent CD "Dumb Gold" on Feb. 8 at Canal Street Tavern.

The show will begin at 9 p.m. and will feature openers Connections and Kyle Showashes. Tickets are $5.

The band's sound is drenched in the semi-distorted, layered guitar work of Tommy Cooper and Darryl Robbins that mesh together in a poppy orchestral manner. The spacey, reverb kissed vocals of PJ Paslosky suit the guitar work well, working side by side with the melodies and chords that the 12 strings are supplying. The new CD includes tight two part harmonies and an atmospheric song structure.

Tracks like "Smoke your homework" and "Valentimes" have a brisk, pop-punk feel to them, while tracks such as "Overlapping Planes" and "Motion Sickness" reveal the band's slower, more somber side. The album is solid as a whole and offers more depth than much of the bands previous work.

The veteran rockers have been around in different variations since 2003, and they recorded three albums between 2009 and 2010, as well as the album "Sunfried Dreams" in March of 2011 and "Tango Boys" in December of 2011. "Tango Boys" included the band's first hit, "Tropics in the Sand," a duet with Kelley Deal of The Breeders.

The band is known for their ability to cut an impressive amount of albums in an amazingly short period of time. For those rock fans that like bands such as Guided by Voices and The Strokes, Motel Beds might be worth a look.
