Dayton's Dirty Socialites releasing new LP and Christmas EP

Between Dec. 12 and 24, Dayton-based band Dirty Socialites will be releasing one song per day of their new LP, Temple of Psychedelic Youth.  On Christmas Eve, they will also release a Christmas EP.

Dirty Socialites has been together since early 2010, with Derek Gullett and Gretta Smak on the guitar and vocals, Matt Webster on the bass, and Mike Wertheman on the drums.  When asked about their genre, Smak said, “We’re indie, but it is what it is.  People reference Sonic Youth.”

Within a month of welcoming a new drummer, Dirty Socialites was able to record 14 songs in two days.  Twelve of those songs will be released on their upcoming LP.

Although the band has been together for nearly three years, the individual members have a long history of making music together.  Temple of Psychedelic Youth will be Smak and Gullett’s third album and Webster and Gullett’s fifth.

The band is unique not only in its music, but in its means of distribution.  They only release their music on vinyl and online, not on CDs.

“Artists still get away with directing traffic,” Gullett said of using vinyl.

“Vinyl is more of an experience,” Smak said. “You have to take the time to sit down and really listen to it.  You can’t put it in the car and go to track five.”

All members of the band are from the Dayton area and have been involved in various aspects of the Dayton music scene.  Above all, the Dirty Socialites emphasize the importance of expression and art.

“We’re all well-rounded, we’re artists in other forms,” Smak said. “We don’t want to limit ourselves to just music.”

On midnight each day, one song will be released on their Facebook page (search for Dirty Socialites) and via YouTube.  More information on the band can also be found at http://www.reverbnation.com/dirtysocialites and dirtysocialitesd8n.bandcamp.com/.

Additionally, Dirty Socialites will be playing at Blind Bob’s on Thursday, Dec. 6, and at the Aberplex on New Year’s Eve.
